Understanding Infant Reflux

Reflux in babies is common — most newborns spit up to some degree. But there's a difference between normal spit-up and reflux that's causing your baby discomfort, interfering with feeding, or affecting weight gain.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is when stomach contents come back up into the esophagus. It becomes gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when it causes complications — pain, feeding refusal, poor weight gain, or respiratory issues.

There's also "silent reflux," where acid comes up but the baby swallows it back down instead of spitting up. These babies may not spit up visibly, but they arch their back, cry during or after feeds, refuse the breast or bottle, have a chronic cough, or seem uncomfortable lying flat.

Why Reflux Happens — The Nervous
System Connection

The vagus nerve controls the valve between the esophagus and stomach (the lower esophageal sphincter), stomach acid production, gut motility, and the coordination of the entire digestive process. It runs from the brainstem through the upper cervical spine and into the organs of the chest and abdomen.

When there's a misalignment in the upper cervical spine — commonly caused by birth stress — the vagus nerve can't function optimally. The sphincter may not close properly, stomach acid production may be dysregulated, and the rhythmic contractions that move food through the digestive tract may be disrupted.

This is why reflux in babies is often connected to the same birth stress patterns we see with colic, feeding difficulties, and general fussiness. The underlying issue is nervous system interference — the reflux is the symptom.

How Chiropractic Supports Babies With Reflux

Gentle chiropractic adjustments address the upper cervical misalignment that's compromising vagus nerve function. By restoring nerve communication, the body can better regulate the digestive processes that are contributing to reflux.

We don't treat reflux directly — we remove the nervous system interference that's preventing your baby's digestive system from working the way it should. For many babies, this means reduced spitting up, more comfortable feeds, less arching and fussiness, and better overall digestive function.

Adjustments for reflux babies are the same gentle fingertip contacts we use for all infants. The focus is on the upper cervical spine, with additional attention to the mid-back area where nerves serving the stomach and digestive organs originate.

Signs Your Baby May Be Struggling

Frequent spitting up (more than normal). Arching the back during or after feeding. Crying or pulling away during feeds. Refusing the breast or bottle. Wet burps or hiccups. Chronic congestion or cough. Poor weight gain. Difficulty sleeping flat. General fussiness that worsens after eating.

If you're seeing several of these signs, it's worth having your baby evaluated — both by your pediatrician and by a chiropractor who specializes in infant care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can chiropractic help with infant reflux?

Yes. Infant reflux is often connected to vagus nerve interference caused by upper cervical misalignment. Gentle chiropractic adjustments help restore nerve function, which supports proper digestive regulation and can significantly reduce reflux symptoms.

What causes reflux in babies?

Reflux can have multiple contributing factors, but from a chiropractic perspective, upper cervical misalignment (often from birth stress) can compromise vagus nerve function — the nerve that controls stomach valve function, acid production, and gut motility.

How gentle is treatment for baby reflux?

Extremely gentle. We use fingertip pressure only. There is no cracking or manual manipulation. Most babies relax during the adjustment.

How long until improvement?

Many parents notice improvement within the first 2-4 weeks of care. Some babies respond sooner. The timeline depends on the severity of the underlying misalignment and how long the pattern has been present.
