Why Newborns Benefit From Chiropractic
Birth is one of the most physically stressful events your baby will ever experience.
Even a normal, uncomplicated delivery places significant compressive and rotational forces on the baby's head, neck, and spine. Difficult deliveries — long labor, back labor, vacuum or forceps assistance, emergency C-section — amplify that stress considerably.
This birth stress can create tiny misalignments (subluxations) in your baby's spine, particularly in the upper cervical area. These misalignments can interfere with the nervous system signals that control feeding, digestion, sleep, muscle tone, and overall comfort.
Most of the time, this interference doesn't show up on medical tests. But it shows up in your baby's behavior — difficulty latching, excessive fussiness, poor sleep, gas and digestive discomfort, or a head that always turns to one side.
Birth Trauma & the Nervous System
The term "birth trauma" sounds dramatic, but it doesn't mean something went wrong. It simply refers to the physical stress of the birth process on the baby's body. Even the most straightforward deliveries involve significant force on the baby's cervical spine.
Interventions increase that force: vacuum extraction pulls on the head and neck, forceps apply compressive force to the skull, and C-sections involve rapid removal from the uterine environment with sudden pressure changes. Each of these can create patterns of tension in the baby's spine and nervous system.
This doesn't mean every baby who had an intervention needs chiropractic care. But it does mean that if your baby is showing signs of discomfort, feeding difficulty, or irritability — a chiropractic evaluation is worth considering.
What We Look For in Your Baby
When we evaluate a newborn, we're checking for subtle signs of spinal misalignment and nervous system stress: restricted range of motion in the neck, muscle tension or asymmetry, feeding behavior, reflexes, and overall tone.
We also use neurological scanning technology when appropriate to get an objective picture of how your baby's nervous system is functioning. This takes the guesswork out of the assessment and gives us data to track progress.
Common signs that bring parents to us: difficulty breastfeeding or latching on one side, excessive crying or fussiness (especially after feeding), arching of the back, gassiness or digestive discomfort, preference for turning the head to one side, difficulty settling or sleeping, and a generally "unsettled" baby.

How Gentle Is a Baby's Adjustment?
This is the question every parent asks — and the answer usually surprises them. An infant chiropractic adjustment uses about the same pressure you'd use to test whether a tomato is ripe. It's a light, sustained fingertip contact. There is absolutely no cracking, popping, twisting, or anything resembling an adult adjustment.
Most babies sleep right through their adjustment. Some fuss briefly and then settle immediately. Many parents notice their baby is calmer, sleeps better, or feeds more easily after the very first visit.

When to Bring Your Baby In
As early as the first week of life. There's no minimum age. Many families bring their newborn for a check within days of birth, especially if labor was long or difficult, if interventions were used, or if feeding isn't going well.
But there's also no "too late." If your baby is a few weeks or months old and you're just now learning about pediatric chiropractic, it's still an excellent time to start. The sooner we can address any interference, the sooner your baby's nervous system can function at its best.
Frequently Asked Questions
How soon after birth can a baby see a chiropractor?
Within the first days of life. We regularly see newborns in their first week. There's no waiting period for a gentle chiropractic evaluation.
How gentle is an adjustment for a newborn?
Extremely gentle. We use fingertip pressure only — about the same amount you'd use to test a ripe tomato. There is no cracking, twisting, or manual manipulation.
What are signs my baby might need chiropractic?
Difficulty latching or feeding, excessive fussiness, arching, gassiness, head preference to one side, difficulty sleeping, and general irritability are the most common signs that bring parents to our office.
Can chiropractic help with breastfeeding difficulties?
Yes. Many breastfeeding challenges are related to tension in the baby's jaw, neck, or upper spine that restricts their ability to latch and suck effectively. Gentle adjustments can often make a significant difference — and we frequently work alongside lactation consultants for collaborative care.
